CAT 2016 - Preparation Strategy for Logical Reasoning
Logical Reasoning consists of question types which test both
your mathematical and logical abilities. Imagine a situation. A group of people
are sitting around a table; you are given a few clues with respect to what
these people are wearing, what is their age and what is their height. Some of
the data is missing, and some of the names are missing too. Now you need to
figure out the puzzle, identify everyone and possibly their seat, all with the
help of the clues provided. Sounds interesting? This is logical reasoning and
welcome to the world of using the wits of your mind.
How to
prepare for Logical Reasoning for Common Aptitude Test (CAT):
Do not
assume any information: There
are many questions which are framed in such a way that students assume some
information and are unable to think of the other obvious options which hide
behind their assumption.
Read everything carefully: There are times when we miss out at simple questions simply because we do not look at the information given below the diagram. Read each and every line carefully. If it is there, it is either important or it is there to confuse you.
Pay close
attention to key words: There
are few key words that change the whole meaning of the sentence or the
question. For example, words like ‘all’, ‘some’, ‘none, ‘at least’, ‘at most’,
‘only’, ‘if and only if etc. are important. Not reading or forgetting these
words may lead to incomplete or improper understanding of the question.
Write down all the given information: Try to attempt every LR problem in a methodical fashion, and solve step by step, because trying to look at all the information at once will confuse even the best of us. Hence it is important to be very clear with data before you get deeper into any case let and getting your time invested in it. The most important step to solving an LR problem is to write down all of the information given in a box, table or diagram e.g. if the problem involves seating arrangements at a round table, always draw the table first and then try various permutations and combinations of people seated around it. Once you have drawn the figure for the problem, you are free to think with an uncluttered mind.
